Building a Tardis

I was in London over the 99-00 winter break and was really impressed by the police box outside the Earl's Court tube station. (At least half the pictures I took during the vacation were of it) So, once I got back I was inspired to build one myself. Liked the idea of a full sized one, use it as a garden shed. Didn't seem to practical as a first project though. In the end I settled for an 8th scale model.    I worked largely from the drawings in the Dr Who technical manual. Being the cheap person I am  I decided to build it from those little plywood crates  that clemantines come in. If you ever think of trying it yourself I can advise you not to underestimated the amount of wood involved, about 4 boxes worth. I hate to think how much wood that would be for a full sized one. May do a more detailed "making of " bit in the unlikely event that anyone is actually interested.

Some pretty redundant pics of gluing the construction together, The project took a heck of a lot longer than I expected when I started, considering its almost all 90 degree butt joints. There are a lot of bits to cut though, and even if fitting doesn't have to be perfect it takes some time.

After priming I  tried to spray paint it which was a mess and looked like hell, a coat of diluted blue rustoleum went over that and the whole thing was covered in talc to give it a matte finish. It was then mostly white so a coat of blue watercolor went over that. My advice is don't be cheap (like I am) and just buy a decent matte model paint. There's real glass in the windows and the light lights   (though it doesn't flash, I fried the strobe circuit I was trying to wire in and just gave up) I'm awaiting fate to throw appropriate scrap lumber in my direction to build a larger one, either quarter or half scale before thinking about going all the way.
